Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to reach the Sahara from Marrakech?
The Zagora dunes are about seven hours away over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, which is why a two-day trip can reach them comfortably. Erg Chebbi at Merzouga is further — around nine to ten hours — so the Merzouga routes start at three days.
Should I choose Zagora or Merzouga?
Zagora is closer and its dunes are smaller, which makes it the sensible choice if you only have two days. Merzouga has the tall dunes of Erg Chebbi that most people picture when they think of the Sahara, and it needs at least three days to be enjoyable rather than rushed.
What is included in a private tour from Marrakech?
An English-speaking driver, a qualified vehicle with fuel, half-board lodging with dinner and breakfast, and one camel per person on the desert routes. Entry to monuments, midday meals and drinks, and tips are not included.
Are the tours really private?
Yes. You travel in your own vehicle with your own driver-guide and never share with strangers, so the pace and the stops are yours.
What should I pack for a night in the desert?
Warm clothing in winter — sleeping bags are not needed — and light clothing in summer, plus sunscreen, a hat, good walking shoes and a flashlight. Wear trousers for the camel trek rather than shorts or a skirt, as the saddles can irritate bare skin.
Can the itinerary be changed?
Yes. Every route can be shortened, extended or reshaped around your dates. Send us what you have in mind and we will build the trip around it.
